5 coffee myths it's time to retire

Coffee attracts folklore like sugar attracts ants. Some myths are harmless; others are actively ruining your morning cup. Time to retire five of the most stubborn.

Myth 1: Espresso has the most caffeine. Per sip, yes — per serving, no. A single espresso carries around 65 mg of caffeine; a regular mug of filter coffee delivers 95 mg or more, simply because there is far more of it. If you want maximum caffeine, order the big filter coffee, not the tiny intense one.

Myth 2: Dark roast is "stronger." Dark roasts taste stronger — smoky, bitter, bold — but they contain marginally less caffeine than light roasts, since roasting burns a little off. "Strength" on labels describes flavor intensity. The gentle-looking light roast is, if anything, the sneakier one.

Myth 3: Coffee stunts your growth. A century-old marketing scare with zero scientific support. No study has ever linked coffee to reduced height. Moderate coffee drinking — three to four cups a day — is associated in large studies with neutral or positive health outcomes for most adults. Your grandmother was misinformed, though she meant well.

Myth 4: Store beans in the fridge or freezer. The fridge is the worst place for coffee: beans absorb food odors and collect condensation every time the door opens, which stales them faster. Keep beans in an airtight, opaque container in a cool cupboard. (Long-term freezing can work — but only sealed airtight, in portions, thawed once.)

Myth 5: Coffee dehydrates you. The caffeine is mildly diuretic, but the cup is still mostly water, and the net effect of a normal coffee is hydrating. Coffee counts toward your daily fluids. The post-coffee bathroom trip is real; the dehydration crisis is not.

Bonus myth: "Coffee should be drunk boiling hot." Extreme heat numbs your taste buds and masks flavor. Let a good coffee cool for a few minutes and it opens up — sweeter, more aromatic, more interesting. The pros actually slurp their coffee lukewarm.

Five retirements and one bonus. Share accordingly at your next coffee run — preferably while holding the large filter coffee you now know is the strong one.
